Since its 1994 launch, the Vicariate for Marriage & Family Life Ministry in the Diocese of Leeds has been on a rich and varied journey of mission, ministry, discovery and change. The most significant of these saw, in 2013 and due to diocesan financial constraints, the ministry being shrunk from one full time worker, plus a part time support worker and part time administrator, to just one worker working one day a week on Marriage Preparation. In 2015, at the request of Bishop Marcus Stock, the focus of our work changed from Marriage Preparation to Parenting. Following this, in 2016, we received short term external funding from the national Celebrating Family Fund to further develop the work begun in an earlier funded project (2008-2012) during which which local volunteer parenting facilitators were trained to deliver the Family Caring Trust’s excellent parenting and family relationship programmes. Now all marriage preparation enquiries in the diocese are handled by parish priests and by Marriage Care. All parenting programme enquiries and parenting programme facilitator training enquiries come to Breda Theakston, Parenting Coordinator, who works one day a week, usually Tuesdays but who takes messages and is available at other times on her mobile.
